Debjani Modak is one of the ten celebrity contestants in the Bigg Boss Telugu 10 house, and the only one who did not grow up speaking the language. She came to Hyderabad from Kolkata in 2021 for a serial called Ennenno Janmala Bandham, learnt Telugu on set while the cameras rolled, and a quarter of a million people now follow a Bengali actress they know as Veda.
Who is Debjani Modak?
She is a television actress who has led daily serials in three languages, and she got to all three without ever sitting an audition. A woman stopped her on the way home from maths tuition when she was fourteen or fifteen and asked whether she would like to be in a Bengali serial. Everything since has come the same way: someone saw the last job and called about the next one.
Her Instagram bio is three airport codes, CCU, HYD and MAA, which is a fair summary of a career built in Kolkata, Hyderabad and Chennai. She signs it “Iti, Kinni”, the Bengali way of closing a letter and the name her family uses.
Debjani Bigg Boss age and date of birth
Debjani Modak was born on 20 March 1996, which makes her 30 years old as Bigg Boss Telugu 10 begins. She was born in Kolkata, West Bengal, and her family still lives there.
Her birthday falls in March, so it will not come round inside the house. A season that starts on 6 September runs about 105 days and finishes in the third week of December.
Debjani Bigg Boss real name, and the two names she answers to on screen
Her real name is Debjani Modak. There is no stage name and no earlier screen name, which makes her unusual among Telugu television leads.
There is a second name, though it is a family one rather than a professional one. She is Kinni at home, and she has carried it onto her own accounts: her Instagram and Threads profiles both read “Debjani Modak (KINNI)”, and her posts sign off “Iti, Kinni”. Reference works record it too, as Kinni Modak and as Kinnu. In Telugu her name is written దేబ్జానీ మోదక్.
The confusion is about her characters rather than her name, and it runs deep enough that Google’s own suggestions ask what Debjani Modak’s name in a serial is. There are two, and both are better known than the name she was born with. She was Dr Vedhaswini, shortened to Veda, in Ennenno Janmala Bandham. She was Satya, the title role, in Satyabhama. Telugu audiences call her Veda to her face, and interviewers open by apologising for it.
She is not the Sathyabhama who acted in Malayalam films, and she is not Sathya of the Kannada serial. Those are different people whose names collide with her character’s.
Debjani Modak Bigg Boss images and photos
Almost all of the photographs of her in circulation come from one of two places: a Star Maa publicity shoot, or her own Instagram feed, which runs to a little over 400 posts. She does not do the volume other television leads do, and the feed is mostly work — shooting days, a costume she liked, the occasional trip home to Kolkata. The vlogs on her YouTube channel are shot the same way, handheld and unpolished.
The wedding photographs of her that circulate are stills from Ennenno Janmala Bandham.
Kolkata is home, Hyderabad is where the work is, and she travels between them every couple of weeks.
The bangles are the one thing she admits she cannot walk past: “I want them, I want them, I want them.”
The frame the bio-wiki card at the top of this page is drawn from.
A Bengali jamdani. She spent four years in Bengali television before a single Telugu line.
On a serial the costume comes from the production, she says. The jewellery she picks herself.
An awards night in 2024, in the middle of the Satyabhama run.
250,000 followers on Instagram and 384 on YouTube. The feed is almost all work.
Where is Debjani Modak from?
Her native place is Kolkata, in West Bengal, and she has never moved out of it in any permanent sense. She works out of Hyderabad and goes home roughly every fortnight.
“My mother, father and sister stay in Kolkata,” she said in December 2023. “I come here, I work, I go back. Here I am all alone and you have to do everything yourself. Wake up in the morning, get ready, come to the shoot, work the full day, and then go back to that room. It is a plain room. No mother, no father.”
The recognition splits along the same line. In Hyderabad she gets stopped in supermarkets. In Kolkata, almost nobody watches Telugu serials, so nothing happens at all.
Debjani’s education and college
She was schooled in Kolkata, at St John’s Diocesan Girls’ Higher Secondary School, with a stretch at a boarding school in between. “Class one to five or six in Kolkata, West Bengal Board,” she said. “Then boarding, then Kolkata again.” She took Class XII in the commerce stream at B.D.M. International.
Her degree is a BA in English Honours. By the time she started it the acting work had already begun, so she did it as a correspondence course rather than sitting in a lecture hall.
How Debjani Modak started acting, long before Bigg Boss
Nobody in her family had anything to do with the industry, and she says the idea had never crossed her mind. A friend at school named Angana had done a portfolio shoot, which was as close as any of it came to her.
Then a stranger stopped her in the street. “I was coming back from my maths tuition and there was a lady who came up to me,” she said. “She said, we are having a Bengali serial, if you are interested, tell us.” She was in class nine or ten.
Her mother said yes at once, on the grounds that her daughter should get ready properly and look nice. Her father said no, and asked what the need was. Those positions have since swapped entirely. “Papa is more supportive than mummy now,” she said in 2023.
Her father went with her the first time.
Debjani Modak serial list, from Kolkata to Bigg Boss
Thirteen years of daily television, in four languages, and only three films.
Debjani Modak movies list

|---|---|---|---|
| 2013 | Knockout | Ruhi Sen | Bengali |
| 2014 | Gangster King | Duniya | Bengali |
| 2016 | Clap Stick | Alo | Bengali |
None of the three is why anyone knows her name, and she has not appeared in a Telugu or Tamil film. The television work is the career.
Bengali television
| Year | Serial | Role | Channel |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2015 | Aponjon | Antara | Colors Bangla |
| 2016 | Phulmoni | Madhabi Debroy | Zee Bangla |
| 2016 | Mahalaya / Matrirupeno | Devi Annapurna | Zee Bangla |

Four years of mythological and folk parts. She played Draupadi at twenty-one and Saraswati at twenty-two.
Tamil television
| Year | Serial | Role | Channel |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | Rasathi | Rasathi, the title role | Sun TV |
| 2020 | Vanathai Pola | Sandhiya, a deputy collector | Sun TV |
Vanathai Pola was the bigger show by far, running 1,146 episodes on Sun TV between December 2020 and August 2024. The series is built around Shreekumar and Maanya Anand rather than around her, so Sandhiya is a substantial part without being the lead one.
Telugu television
| Year | Serial | Role | Channel |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2021–2023 | Ennenno Janmala Bandham | Dr Vedhaswini, the female lead | Star Maa |
| 2023 | Bangaru Chellelu (dub of Vanathai Pola) | Sandhya | Gemini TV |
| 2023– | Satyabhama | Satya, the title role | Star Maa |
Ennenno Janmala Bandham is the one that made her. It ran 490 episodes on Star Maa from 18 October 2021 to 1 September 2023, a Telugu remake of the Hindi serial Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, produced by Kodali Swathi and directed by Suresh Palakurthi. She played a paediatrician who takes on another woman’s daughter. The show won her Best Wife at the 2022 Star Maa awards.
Anuraga Aralitu, the Kannada dub of Ennenno Janmala Bandham, ran on Star Suvarna, which is why reference works list her as working in Kannada too.
What is Debjani Modak’s most recent serial?
Satyabhama, on Star Maa, which began on 18 December 2023 at 9.30 pm and has since finished its run. Star Maa now lists it among the channel’s former programmes. It was a Telugu remake of the Hindi serial Mann Kee Awaaz Pratigya and she had the title role.
Her next project is Bigg Boss Telugu 10. There is no new serial announced beyond it, and there would not be room for one. The season takes the next three or four months of her calendar.
Who are the actors in the TV serial Satyabhama?
| Actor | Character |
|---|---|
| Debjani Modak | Satya, the title role |
| Niranjan B.S. | Krish |
| Anil Allam | supporting cast |
| Madhavi Vootla | supporting cast |
| Yamini | supporting cast |
| Greeshma | supporting cast |
Niranjan B.S. was her co-star in Ennenno Janmala Bandham as well, where he played Yashodhar. Pairing them again was deliberate, and audiences had asked for it. He was later replaced in Satyabhama by Pavan Ravindra.
She puts the second show down to the writing. “It is not the pair, it is the story that attracts the most,” she said. “It is not hero or heroine, it is the writer and the story. That is the main hero and heroine.”
What she liked about Satya was that she is not a patient woman. “Yes means yes and no means no,” she said. “If I don’t want something to happen to me, I will say no to it. And no means no, whatever it is.” She thought the part was closer to her than Veda had been. “I am not like Veda. Veda was much nicer than me. I am more like Satyabhama.”
The Telugu Debjani had to learn before the Bigg Boss house
She arrived in Hyderabad without a word of the language and went straight into a daily soap, which is a job that consists almost entirely of talking.
The first year was rough. “For one full year in Hyderabad I got everything wrong. All the dialogues. Everyone was laughing at my dialogues.” The other actors would be halfway through a take, unable to laugh because the camera was running.
What fixed it was her director’s advice, which she still quotes. “He said, amma, if you want to learn this language, then say it wrong, but say it loud. Don’t be scared of anyone, don’t mind anyone. Say it wrong, but say it loudly.” She credits that one instruction with the whole thing.
She learnt the rest by watching. Telugu films and serials with the subtitles in English and the audio in Telugu, which she found easier than any lesson. She still cannot read the script, and she has asked her fans directly to write their Telugu comments in English letters so she can read them.
Debjani Modak in Bigg Boss Telugu 10
She is in the house as one of the ten celebrity contestants of Bigg Boss Telugu 10, which premieres on Star Maa at 7 pm on Sunday 6 September 2026 and streams on JioHotstar. Nagarjuna Akkineni hosts. The theme is Dasavatharam, ten avatars for the tenth season, and six of the sixteen contestants came in through Agnipariksha 2 rather than from the industry. You can see them all on our page for the Bigg Boss Telugu 10 cast.
The language question that shaped her career follows her in. She faces about a hundred and five days of unscripted argument, in a language she learnt at twenty-five, with no prompter.
Debjani Modak’s fellow Bigg Boss Telugu 10 contestants
Among the celebrities she is up against is Varshini Sounderajan, who anchors Jabardasth and turned the show down for years before saying yes to this one, and Chaithra Rai, who arrived in Telugu television from Kannada serials knowing one word of the language and stayed thirteen years. The film side is Temper Vamsi, a supporting villain in more than fifty pictures. The six who came through Agnipariksha 2 include Singer Jhansi, a folk singer and farmer from Suryapet district, Srishti Vyakaranam, a software engineer turned Femina Miss India AP, and Shalini Damera, a model and emcee working out of Melbourne.
Debjani Modak’s Bigg Boss Telugu 10 remuneration
Rumoured, and unconfirmed since it was first reported in August 2026: two TV9 Telugu reports put her fee at around ₹4 lakh a week. Both hedged their own headlines, saying she was likely to enter rather than that she had signed, and no figure has been confirmed by her, by the channel or by the production.

Debjani Bigg Boss marriage: is Debjani Modak married or not?
She is not married. There is no husband, no engagement on record, and she has never named a partner in public.
The reason the question comes up as often as it does is a serial. In Ennenno Janmala Bandham her character marries Yash and they have a daughter, and a number of viewers took it at face value.
“There is a Reliance store below my guest house,” she said. “One day, after the marriage in the serial, I went there with my assistant to get vegetables and fruit. A lady came up and said, you are Veda, you are so good, I watch you every day.” Then came the question. “Where is your husband?”
She stopped explaining after the second or third time. “He is in the office,” she started answering. “My daughter is at school.”
Debjani Modak’s real husband name
There isn’t one. The name people are searching for belongs to a character: Yashodhar, played by Niranjan B.S., who is her on-screen husband in Ennenno Janmala Bandham and not her husband anywhere else. The wedding photographs that circulate are stills from that serial. The producer, Kodali Swathi, lent her own wedding and engagement sarees and her own gold earrings for those scenes, which is why they look like the real thing.
Asked in 2023 what she would want in a husband, she answered practically rather than romantically. Understanding first, then supportive, then educated, and preferably from outside the industry — a software employee or a businessman. “I have never dated anyone where I worked before,” she said. “Tomorrow, who knows, maybe someone in this industry.”
The birthday post that started a rumour
In March 2026 she posted photographs from her birthday, and one of them had a man in it whose face was hidden behind a soft toy. BigTV Live ran the pictures under a headline about her introducing a boyfriend.
Rumoured, and unconfirmed since it was first reported on 24 March 2026. The man is not named in the report, the report concedes it is guessing, and it ends by saying the truth will only be known if she responds. She has not. Nobody has stood behind the claim, and nothing has been published about it since.
Debjani Modak’s religion and caste
She was born into a Bengali Hindu family in Kolkata. She has not made a public statement about faith, but two things came up naturally on camera: Durga, whom an interviewer put to her as the obvious answer for a woman from Kolkata and she accepted, and Shiva. The Bengali serials she spent four years on were largely devotional. She played Saraswati, Draupadi and, twice, forms of the goddess during the Mahalaya specials that Bengal watches at dawn before Durga Puja.
Her caste is not publicly disclosed. She has never stated one, and no interview of hers raises it.
Debjani Bigg Boss contestant’s family: parents and sister
Father, mother and sister
Her father is Apurba Modak, who runs a business. Her mother is Mita Modak, a homemaker. She has one younger sister, Nandini Modak, who was studying mass media when Debjani last spoke about her.
“Small family,” she said, and that is how she describes it every time.
Her parents took opposite sides over the decision that started her career, and the one who said no is now among the two numbers she rings most. Asked which she dials most in a day, she named her parents, then said there was nothing else on the list.
She has no children.
