Chaithra Rai is in the Bigg Boss Telugu 10 house as one of its ten celebrities, and she got there without ever setting out to act. One sentence in two places is not two sources. The year is weaker still: that entry carried no year at all, and 1990 appears only on the biography sites downstream of it. Her birthday falls in March, so it will not come round inside the house. A season that starts on 6 September runs about 105 days and finishes in the third week of December.

Several other women share the search results with her, and none of them is her. Chaitra Reddy is a different actress, from Tamil and Telugu television, and the questions about a Chaitra’s husband, daughter and net worth that Google suggests alongside this name are mostly about her. Chaithra J Achar is a Kannada film actress with her own Wikipedia article. Angel Rai is someone else again. There is a Kannada actress called Chaithra B. There is a Tulu actress billed as Chaithra Shetty, who goes by Chimpu, and she is not this Chaithra under a married name. And Ashta Chamma is also the title of a 2008 Telugu film with Nani and Swathi Reddy, which has nothing to do with the serial.

Where is Chaithra Rai from?

Her native place is Madikeri, in Kodagu, and she was born and brought up there. She went to St Joseph’s Convent in the town and got as far as her first year of pre-university before the family had to leave.

What moved them was her father’s accident. Until then, she says, none of them had any idea what hardship meant. Afterwards there was a stretch of real money trouble, her schooling stopped where it was, and the family started again in a different town, with nobody they could explain the old life to.

The tongue at home was the coastal one. “Ours is the Mangalore language,” she told Vijaya Karnataka, and she learnt the language and the acting together, keeping pace with both at once. She would still like to make a Tulu film one day. She married into Udupi, and the wedding itself was held in Mangalore.

She works out of Hyderabad and lives in Bengaluru. She could have settled in Hyderabad, where the work is, and did not. Her elder daughter goes to school in Bengaluru.

Chaithra’s education, and the exam she never sat

After her second year of pre-university she got a place on a hotel management course in Chikkamagaluru. Partway through it the college sent her to Bengaluru for training, and she was placed at the Coffee Day in Jayanagar 4th Block.

She never finished the qualification. The serial offer arrived at the same time as her final examinations, and she took the serial instead of the exam. There was no second option to fall back on afterwards, because she had spent it.

How Chaithra Rai got into serials

Nobody in her family had any connection to the industry, and she had never thought about acting. What she was doing at the Coffee Day, on the day it mattered, was spraying her colleagues with a water gun and shouting for tissues.

A film producer was watching, and filmed it without her knowing. He went to the director he was working with, the director went to her training manager, and the manager passed on her number. She was young enough that she took it straight to her parents and told them she would say yes only if they did. They said yes, on the grounds that nobody in the family had ever been offered such a thing.

She acted in Vinu Balanja’s serials early on and still calls him a guru. He trained them hard and shouted at them, and she says that if she can act at all it is because of it.

Seven or eight Kannada serials, across every channel that was running one. She worked two at a time more than once — Radha Kalyana alongside Pournami, and Yugadi alongside Bannada Buguri for Udaya.

Radha Kalyana on Zee Kannada is the one that made her, and she was in it from the first episode to the last, as Vishaka. The part was a villain: loud, self-interested, and out to wreck her own younger sister’s life. It was also, by her account, the first Kannada serial to shoot abroad and the first to bring film stars onto a serial set, and it set a trend the industry followed.

Viewers took it personally. An elderly woman cornered her in a temple to ask why she tormented the heroine like that, and for a while she decided she would never take a negative part again. The anger came home with her too; a word from her mother could start a fight. Her director told her to read the abuse the other way round, as evidence that the performance had landed, and she has read it that way ever since.

Then the show went to Dubai to shoot. At the airport, strangers started shouting “Vishaka, Vishaka” across the terminal, and she cried. She calls it the thing from her career she will not forget.

She has not acted in Kannada since. It is not a decision, she says. Nobody has asked her.

Chaithra Rai serial list: every show, year by year

Sixteen years of daily television in two languages, and one film.

A Telugu team came to Bengaluru doing auditions, worked through the sets, and someone’s manager pointed them at her. They filmed her acting in her Kannada serial on a handycam, took the tape to Star Maa, and she was selected off it. For the screen test itself they wrote her a line or two of Telugu out in Kannada script, because she could not read the alphabet. The only Telugu word she knew was bhojanam, and she knew it because it means the same thing in Kannada.

The part they had picked her for was another villain, because the negative role was all they had seen her do. About a hundred episodes in, the ratings were not where the channel wanted them. So they turned her character positive, wrote the positive characters out, and made her the heroine of the show instead. Ashta Chamma ran past its 1,350th episode, into December 2017.

She nearly did not last the first month of it. After the opening schedule she told her mother she was going home to Bengaluru and switching her phone off. Her mother would not let her, on the grounds that it would finish her name in the industry before it started. On the next schedule the set began to look after her, everyone took a turn at teaching her the language, and within a year she was speaking it. Telugu colleagues now express surprise that she is Kannadiga.

Attarintlo Akka Chellelu ran on Zee Telugu from 25 March 2019 to 29 May 2021, 609 episodes, and she originated both twins, Sravani and Dharani. Most listings have her staying to the end. She left in 2020, and the show replaced her twice over: Bhoomi Shetty took Dharani, and Navya Rao took Sravani through a face-transplant storyline.

She left it, at the top of a dual-role lead, to have her first child.

Radhaku Neevera Pranam began on Zee Telugu on 24 April 2023 and has run past 300 episodes. She plays Pallavi in it.

Kannada serials record live sound and Telugu serials are dubbed, and she has never stopped minding the difference. Speaking your own lines on the day, she says, satisfies in a way that dubbing them later never does.

She has said since the beginning that she prefers serials to films, and has turned down offers to say so. Jamboo Savari, Prajwal Devaraj’s film, happened because people pushed hard enough. She would take a film with real acting in it, and she would take a Tulu one tomorrow.

Her husband is Prasanna Shetty, from Udupi. Theirs was an arranged marriage, and the wedding was held in Mangalore on 26 December 2016. December 2026 will be ten years.

His family took some convincing, and the reason was a television character. All they had seen of her was Vishaka. When he showed them her photograph, what came back was that a woman who behaved like that on a serial would behave like that in their house, and they were frightened of her. His friends had a shorter version: several of them told him outright not to marry her. He talked them all round, and produced her date of birth to settle the separate worry that she looked older on screen than she was.

He has not made his age public, and neither has she. What is on the record is his work. He is with L&T, and has been posted outside India since he finished college, which is somewhere between ten and sixteen years by her own reckoning. He was in Qatar in 2020 and is in Muscat now.

For most of the marriage he has come home every six months or so, and she has flown out when a serial let her. He watches her episodes daily from wherever he is posted and rings up to praise them. “My husband is my fan,” she told Vijaya Karnataka in 2020.

The wedding, and the ten years since

Getting married cost her work, immediately and openly. Producers who had been casting her without a second thought began discussing whether a married actress was worth the risk, on the theory that audiences stop watching. She has been blunt about how much of that goes on, and about who it happens to: artists still unmarried at 35 and at 40, and not only the women.

She describes the two of them as transparent to a fault, with nothing held back in either direction, and the difference between them as a matter of range. She thinks as far as the room she is standing in. He thinks about what is outside it.

Two daughters. Nishka Shetty was born in August 2021 and turned five last month. Prishka Shetty was born on 26 December 2025 and is eight months old.

26 December is their wedding anniversary. The second baby arrived on their ninth.

Both girls have Instagram accounts in their own names, run by the family: @nishkashetty_official, which has 44,400 followers, and @prishkashetty_official, which is newer and has 2,000. Their father posts as @prasannashetty_official.

She went into the second pregnancy having decided to do it a particular way. She was up at three in the morning, taking a cold bath, reading scripture and doing garbha samskara, and she gave up meat for the full nine months after a lifetime of eating it. She dates a spiritual turn in her life to that stretch.

Two months in, she was travelling overnight with her father on a sleeper bus, because a flying phobia had put her off the alternative. She had just looked at the picture of Lalitha on her phone and closed her eyes when the bus hit something hard enough that, a few feet further along the highway, it would have gone over the edge. Nobody was badly hurt. She has credited the timing ever since.

Everyone had told her the second one would be a boy. On the morning of the delivery her mother was praying at home when a flower came off the photograph on the shrine and landed in her hand, and the family read it as a girl. It was.

Since her first daughter was born she has not eaten sugar. Coffee and tea without it, no sweets at home, and the one exception she admits to is being handed something at somebody else’s house, where she cannot say no.

Her father spent his working life in travel: a tours and travels company first, then seven years in Saudi Arabia, then a company of his own once he came back. He is retired now and at home. Her mother is the one who kept her in the industry, twice: once by refusing to let her switch her phone off in Hyderabad, and again every time the money went on costumes instead of anything sensible. She has one younger brother, in business, married about a year ago and settled back in their hometown. The reference records name her parents as B.D. Vasu Rai and Gulabi Rai; she has not named them on camera herself.

She gained about 22 kilos carrying her first daughter. Two months after the delivery, watching everyone she had been working with stay busy while she sat at home with a baby, she started posting reels to feel like she was still in the industry.

The comment that came back said, in effect, aren’t you ashamed to dance, your body has gone like a pig’s. It took her somewhere she describes as depression. What made it worse was who was writing them: the men mostly did not, and the women did.

She screenshotted that one and kept it. Then she lost the weight, went back to the account, and sent the person a message thanking them for it. She gained the same amount the second time round and lost it faster, four and a half years older, which she had not been sure was possible.
