Question

Which BB season has the highest TRP in Telugu?

Season 4 is the answer the published numbers support, at 21.7 TVR for its finale. Why every other figure you'll see disagrees, and what the ratings actually count.

Which BB season has the highest TRP in Telugu — poster with a rising bar chart and arrow behind a trophy, on a crimson panel

Season 4, the 2020 run Abijeet Duddala won. Its grand finale was reported at 21.7 TVR, the highest figure anyone has attached to a Bigg Boss Telugu night, and no season since has a published number that clearly beats it.

Now the caveat, and you should carry it into every ratings argument you have after this. Treat “highest TRP” as a claim rather than a settled fact. Every number below arrives attached to a different slice of the audience, and not one of the reports carrying them says who did the measuring.

What Season 4 actually recorded

Two figures do the work here, and you’ll meet both of them in arguments online. They come from opposite ends of that season.

The launch, in September 2020, was reported at 18.5, described at the time as the highest of any Bigg Boss edition anywhere. Within Hyderabad the same premiere was put at 20.6, and roughly 40% of the city’s population was said to have watched it.

Then the finale in December went higher: 21.7 TVR including HD viewership, among urban 15-plus viewers, alongside 12.3 million impressions across the two Telugu states. Read that audience definition again, because it’s doing a lot of quiet work. Urban only. Fifteen and over. HD folded in.

Even that headline number has a rival version. Some reports put the same finale at 19.51 instead of 21.7, and both figures are still in circulation six years later. Neither camp shows its working.

Why the same season shows up with different numbers

Because a rating is always a rating of somebody, and that somebody shifts under you from report to report.

Season 4’s launch is 18.5 in one framing and 20.6 in Hyderabad. The Season 8 premiere, four years later, was reported at 18.9 TVR, which sounds like it beat 2020 handily. Except that 18.9 is a Hyderabad number, and Hyderabad is where these figures run hottest. Put it beside the matching Hyderabad one and it loses, 18.9 against 20.6.

So you can “prove” either edition won, using real figures from real publications, purely by choosing which pair to line up. That’s not anyone lying to you. It’s what happens when the audience definition is left off.

TRP, TVR and impressions are not the same thing

You’ll see three words used as though they’re interchangeable. They answer different questions:

  • A rating or TVR is a percentage. What share of a defined audience watched.
  • Impressions count people. Season 4’s finale had 12.3 million of them across the twin states.
  • Viewing minutes count time. That 2024 launch week logged 5.9 billion of them.

Notice that one launch week is fairly described as both “18.9” and “5.9 billion”. Neither is wrong. Each counts a different thing, and a headline that picks one has picked the flattering one for you. TRP itself is the older label, carried over from a previous measurement era, which is why you’ll see it and TVR used for the same figure in a single sentence.

Then why does Season 9’s number look so small?

Here’s the trap waiting for you if you go looking. In October 2025, partway through the ninth run, a rating of 11.1 was reported for it. Against 21.7 that reads like collapse.

Don’t read it that way. The 2025 report gives no week, no audience definition and no measurement source, so nothing in it lines up with a 2020 finale computed on urban 15-plus viewers with HD included. Two numbers that can’t be compared are not evidence of a slump, and you should be wary of anyone selling them to you as one.

What that same report does support is a comparison across editions in one snapshot, since those were all measured the same way: Telugu at 11.1, sitting behind Bigg Boss Malayalam’s 12.1 and well ahead of the Hindi season’s 1.8. So Telugu sat near the top of the family that week, by that measure, which may well be the comparison you came here wanting.

Who actually publishes these ratings?

Nobody you can check, which is the uncomfortable part. Television audience measurement in India runs through an industry body, and what reaches you is a channel announcing a good week rather than an open table you can go and read. We looked through all four reports cited on this page, including two trade publications, and none of them names who produced the figure it’s reporting.

That’s the honest state of it. A ratings claim about Bigg Boss Telugu is usually a press release with a number in it, repeated. Sometimes the number is genuinely impressive. You still can’t audit it.

Here’s the tell. “Highest ever rating in the Bigg Boss franchise” is a line you’ll find attached to Season 3, to Season 4 and again to Season 7, in different reports at different times. It can’t be true of all three. Treat the superlative as marketing, and the audience definition as the only part of a ratings headline worth your attention.

The short answer

Season 4 has the strongest claim, on a finale reported at 21.7 TVR among urban 15-plus viewers in December 2020, and a launch that September reported at 18.5, or 20.6 inside Hyderabad. Season 8’s 18.9 is a Hyderabad figure and doesn’t overturn it. What you can’t do is rank all nine seasons cleanly off these numbers, because they were never measured the same way.

The bottom of the range is easier to call than the top, and which Bigg Boss season is worst in Telugu goes through the one edition that fell below 10 on both nights. For the results themselves, all nine winners has them, and how Season 9 played out covers the most recent completed run.

One last distinction. A rating counts the audience that watched; the vote is the audience doing something about it. When Season 10 airs, the Bigg Boss 10 Telugu voting page is where we follow that second number week by week.
